Partnering with Nicaraguan Shelter to Improve Animal Welfare

Last month, our team had the incredible opportunity to travel far from home to support animal welfare. Dr. Diane Marchand and Dr. Alicia Emerson volunteered in a rural coastal area of northwest Nicaragua, working with Amigos Animal Rescue and the shelter 7 Patas: A Safe Haven for Dogs.

During their week-long trip from February 21–28, they performed over 100 procedures, including spay and neuter surgeries, helping to protect the health of the shelter’s rescued animals. Beyond providing direct care, they also offered hands-on training to two local veterinarians and one veterinary student, sharing skills and knowledge that will continue to benefit the community long after their visit.

Surgeries were performed on an open table, supplies were limited, and recovery areas were made from mats and towels under a simple tarp. Yet, even in these conditions, our team’s dedication ensured that every animal received compassionate care, and local staff gained valuable experience to improve care for the future.

We’re proud to share this story and celebrate the commitment of our team members, whose work goes beyond our clinic walls to make a meaningful difference in communities both near and far. Their experience is a powerful reminder of the impact that veterinary professionals can have when they bring expertise, compassion, and education to those who need it most.
